Get Started Early
In the movies, you’ll always see a partner (usually the groom!) scrambling to write his vows on a paper napkin a few minutes before the wedding. Don’t get us wrong, this actually works out for some people! But we highly recommend giving yourself a few weeks and a couple of drafts to make sure you say everything you want to say.
Borrow From Others
Your vows should absolutely be unique, but a little inspiration goes a long way. You’re not writing a college paper here! Plagiarism is 100% okay for wedding vows, and you’ll find that many others before you have said exactly what you want to say to your future spouse. Just a quick Google search for wedding vows will give you an entire library of traditional and non-traditional examples to pull from. Use pieces of other vows that speak to you and feel free to keep them or tweak them as much as you want.
Whether writing is your strong point or not, you may want to get feedback to make sure you and your fiance are in the same mindset during your vows. For example, you don’t want the bride’s vows to be ALL tearful and sentimental, and the groom’s to be a total comedy show of inside jokes. Some couples actually choose to swap notes on their vows before the ceremony to make sure they’re on the same page. If you don’t want to spoil the surprise, ask your officiant if they’ll take a look at both of your vows and give you honest feedback. Chances are, they’ll be more than happy to!
Just Be True to Yourself
At the end of it all, don’t overthink your vows by trying to make them something that isn’t characteristic for you. They don’t have to be grandiose or awe-inspiring -- they just have to be true. When you read them to your soon-to-be husband or wife, they’ll be the sweetest words in the world, and that magic will extend to all of your guests, too.
